Decoding Sustainability
When was the last time you went for Kayaking or simply thought that you would go scuba diving, snorkeling or getting cool photos clicked while jet skiing on a fresh morning of a hot day?
Marine tourism includes activities like cruise travel, boating, scuba diving and more which contribute to employment and economic growth in the coastal regions. It is a vibrant segment of the ocean ecosystem, supporting jobs in hospitality transportation and various tourism related services. India has a network of 12 Major ports and 1807 non-Major ports. That’s a huge number! Isn't it?
Marine tourism is the fastest growing globally and in India coastal tourism has contributed surely to both the state economy and livelihood creation while tourism has certain potential as a source of income for the local community but on the other hand it has in large scale threatening impact on the Marine ecosystem.
We people as tourists and hosts, need to start taking responsibility for our leisure without having nature to pay its cost. Engaging in practices such as Eco-Friendly Tours, responsive wildlife viewing, sustainable water activities, and supporting Marine conservation projects is the need of the hour.
By bringing these practices in Marine tourism we can contribute to the conservation of our marine ecosystems and promote sustainable development.
