Decoding Sustainability
Have you ever dug your broken tooth in your garden soil and waited for the tooth fairy to come along?
In today's case I want to capture your attention on the most negligible aspects of our environment: Soil and the burning need for sustaining it.
The soil ecosystem is an exceptional and a compound network of living beings and abiotic factors that interact in a dynamic environment beneath your feet. From microscopic bacteria to burrowing animals, soil supports a diverse array of life forms playing a critical role in sustaining terrestrial ecosystems and human societies alike. From nutrient cycling to habitat support, soil plays a dominant role in maintaining the terrestrial ecosystems and human well-being.
We humans have long degraded the soil ecosystem by constantly engaging in over-using chemical fertilizers, rapid urbanization, soil ceiling for infrastructure development, use of agrochemicals and improper waste disposal.
Its time now that we comprehend the need to be sensitive about understanding the complexity of the soil ecosystem as it is essential for sustainable land management and conservation of nature. Ensuring the continued health and productivity of soils for future generations is the need of the time.
